The continuum ‘Orthognatodontic clinical course’ follows the orthodontic concept of Prof. Sadao Sato (Japan).
The masticatory system is a functional unit that is composed by: teeth, periodontium, temporomandibular joints, muscles, ligaments, soft tissues
(lip, tongue), salivary and neuromuscular systems.
All these components are directly involved in the maintenance of correct functions. The functions of the stomatognatic organ are numerous such as breathing, swallowing, phonation, mastication, aesthetics, posture and stress management.
Thus, it is easy to comprehend how these functions can together affect the entire human body from the soma to the psyche.
Despite of the presence of numerous simple cosmetics technics, we base our knowledge on more solid functional orthodontic principles. In fact, the mandibular adaptation, that occurs naturally in the human
evolution and that can be induced by orthodontic therapy, allows us to obtain stable results as etiological therapy as opposed to symptomatic. As a result, Prof. Slavicek and Prof. Sato state that the orthodontic therapy will often help to avoid the chances of surgical therapy which reflects in avoiding joint problems as a consequence.
